What is an GFCI?
A GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) is a device that will protect against electrical shock. When there is a difference in power or sudden surges into the device, it will automatically de-energize the device so there is no potential risk of electrical shock. Most of the time, GFCI’s will be placed in areas known as a “wet area.” This is because anytime that your outlet comes in contact with water, the device will be de-energized.

What is an example of how GFCI’s work?
An example would be using the toaster that is plugged in to a GFCI next to a sink full of water. The toaster is on and gets bumped into the sink. Instead of a chance for electrocution, the power will automatically shut off reducing an electrocution hazard.

Where is a GFCI required
GFCI’s are required per National Electrical Code (NEC) for any outlet close to a “wet area.” The most common places we install GFCI’s is:
- Kitchens
- Garages
- Outside Receptacles
- Bathrooms
- Unfinished Basements
